From Style to Function: How to choose the Best Outdoor Tiles
As a professional tiler, you've probably had your fair share of outdoor projects like patio renovation, poolside tiling or garden tiling. With another hot summer being just a few months away, and outdoor entertainment becomes popular, more people are planning to have some work done or completely overhaul their home exterior, including installing new outdoor tiles.
Different applications are best paired with different tiles, though outdoor tiles are often multi-purpose. Making sure you have the right tiles and the right equipment, like a floor tile levelling system, will go a long way to ensuring a successful outcome that will delight your clients.
All Tiles are not Equal
Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles are made for light outdoor use, particularly in covered outdoor spaces where people lounge. They are ideal for patios that are not constantly exposed to harsh weather conditions.
Concrete Tiles
Concrete tiles are a cost-effective way to achieve the aesthetics of natural stone. Though they are durable, years of weather and heavy foot traffic might require tile resealing or a complete overhaul.
Porcelain Tiles
There are two types of porcelain tiles — glossy indoor porcelain that gets slippery when wet and textured outdoor porcelain that is dense and strong. The outdoor tiles might be ideal if your customer wants sleek exteriors.
Quarry Tiles
Quarry tiles are a lot like clay terracotta, except that they are not porous. As such, the material, which gives off a warm and laidback vibe, is water resistant. It doesn’t get slippery when wet, making it perfect for the poolside.
Slate Tiles
Slate is a slip-resistant natural stone which comes in a variety of colours, making them perfect for walkways along gardens. The material is also strong and durable so they can withstand high foot traffic.
Soapstone Tiles
Soapstone can be used anywhere from countertops to flooring. It has a smooth, non-porous surface that is resistant to water damage and adapts well to extreme temperatures. It is an ideal type of tile to surround the pool.
Travertine Tiles
Travertine tiles are a type of limestone that comes in different earth tones. They are naturally textured but the surface may also be polished to look smooth. This might make the material slippery when wet, though.
Your customers might suggest other types of tiles like granite, limestone and sandstone. Granite is great for countertops but its porous nature doesn’t make it ideal for the outdoors. Limestone and sandstone, on the other hand, are prone to scratches and cracks, though sealing these tiles does provide the protection needed for most applications work.
